The DJ John Peel was lauded as a champion of musicians and bands outside and beyond the obvious mainstream. Since 2012, he has also been the focus of serious allegations. When he died in 2004, his family asked Andy to produce this cover of the Buzzcocks’ “Ever Fallen In Love”, which Peel considered alongside The Undertones’ “My Perfect Cousin” to be one of the greatest songs ever written.

Peel had been an early cheerleader for Gang of Four. Participants in the single included other Peel favourites: Roger Daltrey, The Datsuns, The Futureheads, David Gilmour, Peter Hook, Elton John, El Presidente, Robert Plant, Pete Shelley and The Soledad Brothers.

This was, incidentally, the first time that El Presidente’s Thomas McNeice and Andy worked together. Thomas became Gang of Four’s bassist later that year, remaining a permanent member of the band until Andy’s death in 2020, playing on all the releases from the Content album onwards and at all live shows.

“All the artists on the record have at some time been played by Dad, whether recently or before I was born, and in some cases before they were really popular. It’s unpredictable, and there’s hopefully someone or something in it for every listener.” – Tom Ravenscroft  (John Peel’s son), The Guardian, 23 September 2005.
