The Mark of Cain - This Is This (2001)

Andy enjoyed working on this album, which he co-produced and mixed with Phil McKellar for the Australian rock band. He also enjoyed his introduction, courtesy of Mark of Cain, to the Adelaide delicacy, a pie floater.

“I’m working with this Australian band called Mark of Cain. I think this’ll be their fourth album. I’ve been in contact with them for about a year and a half. They’ve done a lot of backing tracks already in Sydney. John Scott, who’s the main man, came out to London and we’ve been spending time doing arrangements on the tracks and vocals and overdubs and mixes. They’ve been working with the drummer from Helmet on it. He’s done a really good job from what I’ve heard so far. I imagine that they’ll be shooting for August or September to put this out.” – Andy, Perfect Sound Forever/ Furious.com.

“There were three people that I really admired, guitar wise, and their live music, and I got to work with Rollins, got to work with Albini, and Andy Gill of Gang of Four. They were a huge influence on me and working with them was the greatest thing I can think of, out of this whole musical endeavour.” – John Scott, The Mark of Cain – The Rock Pit, 2013.

“This was also a good song from the point of view that Andy Gill who produced this song, had me sing in a way I’ve never tried before and I liked how it came out.” – John Scott, The Mark of Cain, discussing the song “[R] Retaliate”

Album reviews:

“In tow with producers Phil McKellar (Grinspoon, Regurgitator, The Cruel Sea) and Andy Gill (ex-Gang of Four), the sound on this album is clear and crisp, bringing down the line all the bile and angry bits to be expected of the band with many a reeling, robust audio left hook that blasts the listener through the speakers… An album that is complete in its entirety, the Mark of Cain show no sign of throwing in the towel on their prolific brand of hardcore. This is This compacts 5 years of waiting into one devastatingly brutal CD. A must have.” – Lee Jasper, Oz Music Project, 8th August 2004.
