Friespiel - The Soundtrack (1994)

What would happen if you brought together prominent musicians from different cultures and generations and invited them to work together? Freispiel, filmed and recorded in November 1993 over a few days in Cologne, brought together British and German musicians including Andy, Peter Hook, Jaki Liebeszeit, Gudrun Gut, Geordie and Jaz Coleman and challenged them to find an answer—or just improvise great music.

Andy played guitar on “Freunde Rap (Session 1)”, “Simple Advice (Session 5)”, “Fremd in Deisen Land” and “Trumpet Song (Session 5).”

It was the second time Andy had encountered members of Killing Joke, and ten years before Andy produced the Killing Joke album in 2003. Andy told WHOM: “We ran into each other at various times. On two different occasions we had the same management. The next major reconnection with them was when I was doing the Freispiel German album in Cologne.”

Michael Mertens from Propaganda provided keyboards and electronics on some of the Freispiel material, whilst Andy was credited 6 years earlier in 1988 as a performer on the Laughter, Tears And Rage album by Act, a band featuring ex-Propaganda singer Claudia Brücken.

The album is not on streaming services but available to buy on DISCOGs etc.
